Kick starting my career choice as an SEO Analyst!

here I’m sharing my professional journey as a SEO.

On those days, I sobbed a lot after completing my bachelor degree. Just did little household tasks and you know, how it will be…staying at home without a job after education.

It wasn’t that much bad, my mom supported me a lot. And only by her support I’m here. Writing these lines.

“SEO” what is that?!

For all the knots happened in my career, this guy - Aswin Vayiravan(My best buddy, a web geek) has one predominant role. He showed me the internet world then, the blogging addiction.

Like a magneto, internet pulled me into it. Started digging a lot and found myself a blogging platform. Can even be called a blog pattern! Gradually learned how to improve my website traffic with the help of Google search engine. I made few tweaks to satisfy my goal.

Subsequently, I came to know the techniques which I had been following for ages is itself a great domain in web. Calling “Search Engine Optimization” on the whole! It gave me the extra boost to spend almost 10-12 hours a day.

Felt excited to see some great improvement in my blog traffic. Later in process, the Social Media sites, the link building … All stuffs came in. And that’s how I gained profitable proficiency on my blogging voyage!

On the other half, I slowly deviated apart from my academics. Just questioned my mind, why to learn Engineering Mathematics 2, 3, Software Quality Assurance . .?? Which is not going to be a helper to me in any point of my life?

Decided to quit engineering and planned to become a full-time professional blogger. But, wasn’t bold enough to take that decision. So, resolved my college life with friends, hangouts and participated in other activities.

First Opportunity for SEO

OK then, what happened after my five years of engineering? Five months back, I was completely clueless. Mother advised me to join masters degree in computer science again.

I didn’t like that. Anyhow, I had nothing to argue against her. That was the time. An opportunity came in via Facebook. One of my friend shared a job opportunity at Zoho Corporation for the SEO Analyst position; that too for the freshers. My joy crossed beyond the horizon and all at once I started creating a resume.

Yes! until that time I didn’t have a resume of mine. There, again I was bit confused on how to make a good resume for the SEO analyst job?

Google’d.. but no clue. Again with that same mad friend, I got one rough clue and created a professional resume focusing on SEO(Added some salt & pepper too). After some formal procedures, I went in for the General Aptitude test of Zoho and waited patiently at the lobby.

My friend at Zoho received me and showed his cabin, office etc. A man like me coming from a small town will be astonished on seeing that gigantically cool office at DLF IT Park, Chennai for sure. So, did I.

It was the time about the starting of the aptitude test. When I entered into the exam hall, I shocked!!! Ooohhh nooo…!! There were nearly 150 candidates who came there for the same job position.

For whiling some time, read the Question paper. I assured myself that I have never heard any such kind of questions. So, started making some fun with the question paper.. Like writing microformats, meta tags for the questions I know and then passed my answer sheet.

Not knowing what to say my dad; Came out of the office with bitter sadness.

A New Plan to get hired!

Later, that was the time I worried a lot. Went idle for long days. And again, fellow friend pinged me and shared about his plan and how he got his job ! - willfreshdeskhireme.in

It was a simple yet great idea to attract corporate. And I tried to copy the same. But, since it was a website there was no use of copying the same. So, I thought a lot! Overall I came up with one singularity in my mind.

The way of presentation should be new and simple. By that time, I heard about Tall Tweets by Amit Agarwal.

Bulb sparkled a flash! I almost wrote a similar story like my friend but focused it well on SEO(He too helped me). Then started following my favourite start up company CEO’s and long-tweeted them one by one. Waited for 2 days, no response. Then forwarded the same via E-mail.

You must believe, it really got a great response. Started getting calls from HR people one by one. That single day, I nearly got 4 interview calls. Nevertheless amazing! Isn’t it?

Even confused with the voice calls. Among them I missed 2 opportunities; I don’t know why! I didn’t know what those companies expected from me as a SEO analyst.

I simply talked like “Semantic Web, Microformats and gave an underline that I will try to reduce the PPC expenses” but, later came to know all they need is link building.

Got few good offers, but there was another issue. This was actually the only humble request from my mom, she asked me not to go for long distances. But, all job offers I got, are from Gurgaon, Pune and Mumbai.

So again, I reshuffled my thoughts and started focusing on closer boundaries like Chennai and Bangalore. Using Quora, Your-story, Social Samosa I created a huge list of fast growing Startups and sorted it down in high-priority basis.

Followed the same strategy and contacted the Higher executives via email.

Note: People, who plan to choose SEO as your career. In the interview, talk more about high-quality link building and your techniques to acquire them.

In that way, I e-mailed Arun Athiappan -CEO of TicketGoose during one late night. Within few minutes, I got a text to my inbox. Surprisingly he liked and forwarded my profile to Karthi Easwaramoorthy(Co-founder/President at TicketGoose.com).

On the next day, I remember I got a call from their office “Hi! this is sujatha….” My manager! And all usual suspects happened.

Career Journey to  Bengaluru

It was my first time, to Bangalore. Helluva yeah! I got the face-to-face interview from TicketGoose. With lots of hope, and little scare I reached the office before the interview timings. So, I went back to the temple nearby and had a little chat with my dad.

He asked about my preparations, I kept mum. You know what normally happens in these situations. Again, went back to the office and called my manager. She received me and took me to the conference hall. Ohh!! The workplace was stupendously silent; all were busy with their works.

Inside the conference hall, I saw lot of scribbles on white board discussing about SEO for TicketGoose. #Electrified that they care much about SEO. With a cup of hot chai and iPad, came in Karthi sir!

The interview began.

…And, this is how I began my professional life as a SEO analyst.
