Kick-starter Guide: How to Get Your Dream Job in SEO?

“I’m a beginner in SEO and I’m looking for job opportunities in SEO field”

Is this you? Are you looking for a job in SEO but struggling to start where? SEO is turning to be one of hottest tech jobs in 2017 and so the demand is.
SEO Career Guide for Beginners

There are a lot of scary stories, that SEO is dead. No.. no. SEO job vacancies are keep increasing, from a boutique, project centers to big eCommerce and media agencies.

I come from Dindigul (a small town) and living in Bangalore. I kick-started my SEO career at TicketGoose and landed as an SEO Consultant at Myntra(India’s Fashion eCommerce Goliath). Now, I’m working as a Digital Marketing Manager at a dream company and every month I used to get an average of 8-10 job offers in SEO & Digital Marketing domain.

let’s get in..

Q1: How to learn SEO and become a Professional?

Ans: There are tons of resources and tools for SEO available online. But, where to begin with? Here are some of the SEO blogs which I follow:
  1. Moz
  2. Backlinko.com
  3. ShoutMeLoud
  4. Search Engine Land
  5. Search Engine Watch
  6. Neil Patel

These are good for the beginner level, and I recommend Search Engine Land’s SEO Periodic table for better understanding. Subscribe to RSS feeds in your Google Reader or any RSS feeder you prefer.

Practice SEO you learn. But how?

Q2: How to Practice SEO by Yourself?

Ans: In short, Build your own Website and apply your SEO techniques.

Nothing would help you, until you apply it and see the results by yourself. I personally started blogging from Google’s Blogger.com, WordPress.com and later built a website with a custom domain name. And, that’s how you gonna learn things,
  1. How to buy SEO friendly Domain Name?
  2. How to point your Domain to Hosting provider?
  3. How to build website/blog? (I’m using WordPress)
  4. How to add Meta tags, Canonical tags, URL redirection, Schema tags, Google Analytics setup, Google Search Console etc.?
  5. How to do Keyword Research?

In Blogger platform, mostly things are predefined and have less control. So, I use WordPress where you will get lots to customize things on your own.

BTW, do you rank for your Name?

When you get job interviews, most HR will Google your name before an interview. So make sure you have a website and Social Media profiles in place. Involve with popular SEO communities and leave comments to show your knowledge in SEO space. With your personal blog, you build your personal branding too.

Having your own website with SEO findings, guides could give you more control in the interview. And, will definitely help them put you on the priority list.

In my interview, I’ve shown them bloghelpline(tech & how-to guides blog) and the keywords I ranked for.

Q3: No Experience? How to gain experience without Corporate experience?

There is no standard certification course for SEO but still, you can take exams from Google’s products(AdWords certification, GAIQ test etc). Again, showcase the keywords you ranked with your website.

Some other options to gain SEO experience,
  1. Author on authority blogs
  2. Pitch for freelance projects
  3. Cross sell your service (sell website, with SEO service)
  4. Rank for yourself (“SEO expert” in “your Locality”)
  5. Get more endorsements on LinkedIn

Q4: How to find a job in SEO and Ace Interview?

SEO is not a kinda job of attending walk-in interviews. Be smart, do a little research on finding the right company for you. I would suggest you target eCommerce, B2B, Online portals, and digital media agencies where you can learn a lot. Here’s my little story on how I won my first SEO job.

Best places to look for SEO jobs,
  1. LinkedIn
  2. Angel.co
  3. Naukri

Top SEO Interview questions you should be prepared for,
  1. What is SEO and what’s your approach?
  2. What are the SEO tools do you use?
  3. Is link building dead?
  4. What are your link building strategies?
  5. Can you tell me how Google crawls webpages?
  6. Tell me about NoIndex, NoFollow, Robots.txt
  7. How will you cross-check whether your SEO campaign is working or not?

In some cases, you might get some SEO assignments too.

So, get prepared…

All the best for your future endeavors.

How to start an eCommerce business in India

With 3 to 4 startups emerging every day, you should know how to start an eCommerce business in India. What do you want to know about eCommerce in India? It’s a revolution of startups.

I can give you the numbers. From 3100 startups in 2014 to a projection of 11,500 by 2020(1) and you need to believe that the markets are changing the way it was long back.

Yes. I know that you may be wondering how these people got money to start their own startup? That’s why we got investors, VCs, incubators and so on. Do you believe if I say that the number of active investors in the Indian ecosystem has grown from 220 in 2014 to 490 in 2015(2)?

This is more than double the number of investors in 2014. So what are waiting for? Let’s get started.

Hereby, I shall guide you through various topics that I’m going to cover in this article.

Market Research: Evaluate Your eCommerce Business and Revenue Models

For every business that you’re going to start, you need a thorough market research.
  1. Once you have an idea that benefits the people out there, think about the problems that might want the people to use your product/service.
  2. Based on the problem, now you might want to revise your plan
  3. Collect the relevant information needed to develop your plan
  4. Analyze the market potential – potential buyers. It is to be noted that 80% of revenue comes from 20% of buyers | Pareto principle(3)
  5. Competitors – yet another mark which you need to take care of. Plan accordingly whom you are going to compete since you are an amateur.
  6. Make the decision.
Let’s move over to the revenue model.

You should know that a good revenue model should consist of all the cash flows for at least 5 years from the date of start of the company.

  1. Prepare a separate cash flow table for outflow and inflow with 5 year predictions.
  2. Allocate some more capital for each year since you can’t run with the same amount of money that was at the beginning.
  3. Include expansion plans in your financials(must). You can’t run the same for all 5 years.
  4. Overtime, you can raise your selling price since your presence is well-known to the market and people can’t avoid you and to make some profit which is the main goal here.
  5. So let’s compare the cash outflow and inflow here and make decision whether or not to go ahead.
  6. First look at the break-even; if you think that the break-even achieved satisfies you, you’re good to go.

How To Register Your eCommerce Business In India?

Before you move on to register your firm, you need to decide whether to sell your products through your own portal or to run as a Market Place.
  1. VAT is the main registration if you prefer to sell your own products through your own portal as a firm.
  2. Service Tax registration is needed if you prefer to run it as a MarketPlace model.
No. It’s not over yet. We’ve just seen registration for products to be sold. You have 5 options to register an e-commerce firm to run in India which I’ve presented below:
  1. Sole Proprietorship – Here all the assets will be under the name of one person who will be responsible for anything that happens to the company.
  2. Partnership Firm – It needs a minimum of 2 persons and not usually followed in India. Its suitable if you prefer to do your business along with your job.
  3. Private Limited Company – This is the one you all have seen in lot of places because the investor likes to invest in Pvt. Ltd. Companies.
  4. Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) – Minimum of 2 partners are required for an LLP registration. To understand easily, it can be said that it’s a combination of a partnership firm and private limited company.
  5. One Person Company (OPC) – It’s similar to that of private limited company and is suitable for all startups which has one founder or owner who likes to enjoy all the benefits.
This is just a glimpse and an advice from your CA can be of great use in registering your firm.

How Much Does It Cost for your eCommerce Startup MVP?

I’m just going to give an estimate for setting up a basic office which includes space rent and legal charges.

Legal charges ~ INR 10,000
Payment Gateway 2-4% of transaction fee
eCommerce Web Development INR 5,00,000 – 10,00,000 (it depends on requirements)
Computers, servers INR 60,000 (including hosting)
Office rent INR 6,000 – 7,000 avg. (select right place for easy operations)
Shipping INR 20,000 (for setting up) + individual order cost depending on weight in kilograms
Note: All these are approx. cost estimations based on the client projects we involved with.

Should It Be A Marketplace (or) Single brand Online Store?

MarketPlace and an own online store has its own advantages and disadvantages.

If you think that your product needs no branding and it is at the urge to reach every customer in India, it is wise to sell at a market place. In a market place, you can save marketing costs; lakhs of people visit the site daily; success in short period of time.

If you think that your product is somewhat like a monopoly and nobody can beat you for more than 2 years, you may go with own store which helps branding, customer loyalty etc.

Xiaomi entered Indian market through Flipkart and it has its own store and it also sells through other marketplaces. Though it’s not a market leader, Xiaomi’s move is different from the usual one.

Best eCommerce Platforms For Available Budget

Selecting the most suitable eCommerce platform(4) for creating, managing and maintaining an online store is of critical importance, as it can be the factor responsible for either success or failure for your business.

I have just given intro to some of the best eCommerce platforms across the world.

Magento

Magento is the giant in eCommerce platforms with two editions – Community edition which is an open source with all the basic features and the locked features can be unlocked with its Enterprise edition which benefits us with better scalability and full page caching.

Best suitable for: Very large catalogues, more customization, PHP DevOps.
Pros: Solid CMS, Self-hosted, Large plugin repository, Open Source Software(OSS)
Cons: requires Developer team and lots of resources.

Shopify

Unlike Magento it’s got four versions Lite, Basic, Pro and Unlimited which has got their own features. There is also an option “Shopify plus” crafted for business which offers advanced features regarding security, APIs and fulfillment.

Best suitable for: single (or) low catalogue eCommerce business.
Pros: Shopify community, easy Go-to Market, less Technical Knowledge.
Cons: Hosted commercial software, less customization, high maintenance cost of big sites.

SpreeCommerce

An open source eCommerce platform started to allow world’s sellers in 2008. It is running by the famous Ruby on Rails app, and powering more than 50,000 eCommerce businesses around the globe.. Now, it has no core team for further project enhancements. But still you can use Solidus(5), a fork project of Spree Commerce developed and used by Bonobos and AYR eCommerce team.

Best suitable for: Huge product catalogue, more front-end and back-end customization, ROR DevOps.
Pros: Built on the famous Ruby on Rails(ROR), More stable, easy customization and secure.
Cons: Requires ROR developers, very few plugins and themes comparing to Magento.

PrestaShop

A dynamic open source software which is launched in 2007. As reviewed by Andrew Bleakley, it is the first to combine open source and cloud services to offer for the customer. Today, more than 2,00,000 ecommerce stores run on PrestaShop. You can find more beautiful prestashop themes at Themeforest.net(6)

Best suitable for: Team with minimum technical knowledge.
Pros: Beautiful SEO ready themes, SEO friendly URLs and clean dashboard.
Cons: Paid Plugins, Less customization, Not good for large inventory sites.

OpenCart

An open source software which comes with all basic features and most suited for startups – particularly those with hands on web development experience. In order to enable any functionality, you may want to download extension or modules which come at a one-time fee.

Best suitable for: Simple and quick go-to market eCommerce sites.
Pros: Good collections of Themes, easy-to-use UI and hosting availability.
Cons: Not so suitable for sites with large inventories + poor performance.

WooCommerce

Launched in 2011, it has made its mark by being downloaded 10.2 million times by users across the globe. Also it’s got a 30% market share for all ecommerce sites. Best suited for WordPress users since WooCommerce can theoretically be integrated into any WordPress theme.

Best Suitable for: Digital Downloads, Single product or small inventory with less traffic.
Pros: Abundant plugin repository and easy web hosting and migration.
Cons: Security, Custom Functionalities etc.

Multichannel Retailing

So, if you’re a seller who does your selling in a marketplace, it need not be only one because you have to look at a wider angle to make profits.

So when you are selling at different platforms the same product, the number of items you are selling that product would be the same across all platforms. When a buyer buys your product from one platform, it’s your time and risk to update the inventory in every other platform.

And I don’t wanna mention about the other risks and time-consuming jobs in multichannel retailing because we have software for it.

Some best software are, UniCommerce(7) and BrownTape(8).

Payment Gateways for Online transaction

Payment gateways are ones without which you can’t run an online store since in India, it requires a lot of documentation, verification etc.

Why so much hassles for a starter? That’s why I suggest the alternatives that I’m going to talk about hereby.

PayUMoney - One such gateway which requires to link your presence savings account to get started with.

Instamojo - yet another payment gateway which is easy to get started with no setup fee and upfront fees. Now, instamojo is revolutionizing the payment gateway methods. If you are selling any service or a single product you can make great use of Instamojo cart.

payUmoney Instamojo
No firm registration required No firm registration; even freelancer seller can use
No current bank account required Savings bank account is more than enough to get started with
No setup cost No setup cost
No annual maintenance charge No maintenance charges in here too
Transaction Discount Rate (TDR) of 2% + 12.36% service tax on TDR TDR of 1.9% + 14.2% service tax on TDR
3 days span to take the money to the seller from the date of delivery Same as payUmoney, 3 days of span to take the money to the seller.

Shipping And Logistics

Do you know what’s the word in town? Logistics to be the game changer for eCommerce in 2016(9).

During the time when Flipkart was aggressive in its market penetration, it started its own Shipping and Logistics platform eKart logistics. This is one move of forward integration. Flipkart was the first to introduce product tracking as you can see on the website after you’ve placed an order.

Amazon has its own platform as a backward integration where it collects from suppliers to be shipped for customers.

Trends predicted for 2016-17 be like,

  1. Tech-based supply chain for Tier I and Tier III cities.
  2. Apps to track vehicular movements.
  3. Innovative packaging for perishable goods.
  4. Reduce turnaround time and to forecast customer demands using big data.
  5. More tie ups with offline stores for omnichannel.

Delhivery

India’s first end-to-end supply chain founded on May 2011 focused on online retail which provides services to over 25,000 sellers. Delhivery’s commerce technology toolkit is fully customizable to seller’s specific needs. They reach 90,000 customers daily and have got 150,000 SKUs.

Their management tools include global inventory, distributed order management, channel integration, customer engagement, campaign creation and management, fulfilment management and demand and channel analytics.
Bluedart

Unlike Delhivery, Bluedart not only serves for ecommerce companies but also for daily customers. They have the most extensive domestic network covering over 34,267 locations, and service more than 220 countries and territories worldwide through their group company DHL.

Bluedart has an ISO 9001:2008 certification by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. They serve for B2B and B2C initiatives including partnering with some prime portals across the country.

Finally, landed in eCommerce Wonderland

So, where shall I begin with? From, how I got to know about job vacancy in Myntra? How I reached them? Or about my SEO interview?!… Although whatever, if you are in SEO domain this must be your dream company. Dot that! And somehow finally, I grabbed my hold of the dream!

To begin this tale, I should roll back five months from now. As I did mention, it was really the crucial time hunting for an SEO job. By multiple strategies, I came to know that Myntra had a vacancy for an SEO Manager via LinkedIn. I know my qualification and experience; so kept my mouth shut. But, after a couple of minutes I was caught up with a thought, why I should waste a chance?! Sending a mail will never be a suicide attack! Isn’t it?  Later, I slowly came on contemplations about Myntra and its brand value. And, started exploring so many awesome reasons for ‘my mission to Myntra’!

Let me sort out some:
  1. It’s an Awesome eCommerce Company and recently acquired by the big fish – Flipkart.com. So that, the Knowledge transfer would be no treacherous! And so there could be no doubts further.
  2. Through friend connections, I came to know that it has some excellent work culture and unlike other companies, it gives us chance to do some real-time experiments and seek new opportunities!
  3. It’s ultimately a Fashion store, So that I can look good and get upgraded.

And honestly speaking, they just redefined the Workplace. Not only by looks, but also in all bases that begins with equity.

So one Helluva yeah for everything! After a long wait, from the mail conversation with HR till the final HR interview. It’s a dream come true moment!  Deem me! My “Mission to Myntra” is been succeeded.

I remember it, it was on thirteenth of December I finalized everything with the HR and snatched my offer letter from Myntra. And I was at home that time, after confirming the mail again and again that pointed me as an SEO Consultant(Just to make sure myself)… Pinched zoom in my browser window to see the Myntra logo in the offer letter. Ran high nuts to the upstairs for having this a print-out copy!

Showed it to my parents and that was a ‘more than words’ moment to see the bliss on my parents face. I have given them several disappointments with my poor academic performance and now I feel, finally I made them feel happy and got succeeded in constructing my own life track.

And, 15th December 2014- Probably, the best Monday I ever had in my life span. My joining day with Myntra.com! Woke up at six and rushed to the Sony Center Bus Stop, reached Silk Board and took an auto.

Finally stepped into eCommerce’s Wonderland – Myntra.com !

Also, now only I got the jam-packed trust on online shopping sites. Yippee! Gonna enjoy special discounts and beat up bengaluru chills! 😉

Kick starting my career choice as an SEO Analyst!

here I’m sharing my professional journey as a SEO.

On those days, I sobbed a lot after completing my bachelor degree. Just did little household tasks and you know, how it will be…staying at home without a job after education.

It wasn’t that much bad, my mom supported me a lot. And only by her support I’m here. Writing these lines.

“SEO” what is that?!

For all the knots happened in my career, this guy - Aswin Vayiravan(My best buddy, a web geek) has one predominant role. He showed me the internet world then, the blogging addiction.

Like a magneto, internet pulled me into it. Started digging a lot and found myself a blogging platform. Can even be called a blog pattern! Gradually learned how to improve my website traffic with the help of Google search engine. I made few tweaks to satisfy my goal.

Subsequently, I came to know the techniques which I had been following for ages is itself a great domain in web. Calling “Search Engine Optimization” on the whole! It gave me the extra boost to spend almost 10-12 hours a day.

Felt excited to see some great improvement in my blog traffic. Later in process, the Social Media sites, the link building … All stuffs came in. And that’s how I gained profitable proficiency on my blogging voyage!

On the other half, I slowly deviated apart from my academics. Just questioned my mind, why to learn Engineering Mathematics 2, 3, Software Quality Assurance . .?? Which is not going to be a helper to me in any point of my life?

Decided to quit engineering and planned to become a full-time professional blogger. But, wasn’t bold enough to take that decision. So, resolved my college life with friends, hangouts and participated in other activities.

First Opportunity for SEO

OK then, what happened after my five years of engineering? Five months back, I was completely clueless. Mother advised me to join masters degree in computer science again.

I didn’t like that. Anyhow, I had nothing to argue against her. That was the time. An opportunity came in via Facebook. One of my friend shared a job opportunity at Zoho Corporation for the SEO Analyst position; that too for the freshers. My joy crossed beyond the horizon and all at once I started creating a resume.

Yes! until that time I didn’t have a resume of mine. There, again I was bit confused on how to make a good resume for the SEO analyst job?

Google’d.. but no clue. Again with that same mad friend, I got one rough clue and created a professional resume focusing on SEO(Added some salt & pepper too). After some formal procedures, I went in for the General Aptitude test of Zoho and waited patiently at the lobby.

My friend at Zoho received me and showed his cabin, office etc. A man like me coming from a small town will be astonished on seeing that gigantically cool office at DLF IT Park, Chennai for sure. So, did I.

It was the time about the starting of the aptitude test. When I entered into the exam hall, I shocked!!! Ooohhh nooo…!! There were nearly 150 candidates who came there for the same job position.

For whiling some time, read the Question paper. I assured myself that I have never heard any such kind of questions. So, started making some fun with the question paper.. Like writing microformats, meta tags for the questions I know and then passed my answer sheet.

Not knowing what to say my dad; Came out of the office with bitter sadness.

A New Plan to get hired!

Later, that was the time I worried a lot. Went idle for long days. And again, fellow friend pinged me and shared about his plan and how he got his job ! - willfreshdeskhireme.in

It was a simple yet great idea to attract corporate. And I tried to copy the same. But, since it was a website there was no use of copying the same. So, I thought a lot! Overall I came up with one singularity in my mind.

The way of presentation should be new and simple. By that time, I heard about Tall Tweets by Amit Agarwal.

Bulb sparkled a flash! I almost wrote a similar story like my friend but focused it well on SEO(He too helped me). Then started following my favourite start up company CEO’s and long-tweeted them one by one. Waited for 2 days, no response. Then forwarded the same via E-mail.

You must believe, it really got a great response. Started getting calls from HR people one by one. That single day, I nearly got 4 interview calls. Nevertheless amazing! Isn’t it?

Even confused with the voice calls. Among them I missed 2 opportunities; I don’t know why! I didn’t know what those companies expected from me as a SEO analyst.

I simply talked like “Semantic Web, Microformats and gave an underline that I will try to reduce the PPC expenses” but, later came to know all they need is link building.

Got few good offers, but there was another issue. This was actually the only humble request from my mom, she asked me not to go for long distances. But, all job offers I got, are from Gurgaon, Pune and Mumbai.

So again, I reshuffled my thoughts and started focusing on closer boundaries like Chennai and Bangalore. Using Quora, Your-story, Social Samosa I created a huge list of fast growing Startups and sorted it down in high-priority basis.

Followed the same strategy and contacted the Higher executives via email.

For Assistance: Tricks to find CEO’s Email addresses (DIY)

Note: People, who plan to choose SEO as your career. In the interview, talk more about high-quality link building and your techniques to acquire them.

In that way, I e-mailed Arun Athiappan -CEO of TicketGoose during one late night. Within few minutes, I got a text to my inbox. Surprisingly he liked and forwarded my profile to Karthi Easwaramoorthy(Co-founder/President at TicketGoose.com).

On the next day, I remember I got a call from their office “Hi! this is sujatha….” My manager! And all usual suspects happened.

Career Journey to  Bengaluru

It was my first time, to Bangalore. Helluva yeah! I got the face-to-face interview from TicketGoose. With lots of hope, and little scare I reached the office before the interview timings. So, I went back to the temple nearby and had a little chat with my dad.

He asked about my preparations, I kept mum. You know what normally happens in these situations. Again, went back to the office and called my manager. She received me and took me to the conference hall. Ohh!! The workplace was stupendously silent; all were busy with their works.

Inside the conference hall, I saw lot of scribbles on white board discussing about SEO for TicketGoose. #Electrified that they care much about SEO. With a cup of hot chai and iPad, came in Karthi sir!

The interview began.

…And, this is how I began my professional life as a SEO analyst.
